The church of the Archangel
Michael with refectory and alms-house was built in the end
of 1690s and consecrated in 1702. The contrast of the compact
well-proportioned temple streamed upwards and stocky side-chapel
make its volumetric composition. The lower tetrahedral construction
of the temple lighted from two window openings is covered
with the torispherical vault. The second tetrahedral construction
bears the opened octagonal construction – the bell place,
covered with the close vault and topped with a big “onion”
cupola on the eight-sided circle. There are stairs in the
wide wall of the tetrahedral constructions. It leads to
the bell place. Almost square side-altar (14,5 x 15,5 meters)
is divided by two walls into three rooms: hallway in the
western part, the alms-house in the south and refectory
in the north. They are bridged with the jointed vaults and
flat hip roof. The church of Archangel representing the
featured forms of the end of the 17th century refers to
the temple-bell tower type.

The women’s alms-house was built nearly 1763. In 1800s the
church of the Holy Sign was erected. It copied the volumetric
composition and decor of the Archangel church. To make ensemble
look accomplished and to add integrity to the space composition
the archaic forms of the end of the 17th century were revived
in the period of classicism. The repeats of the archaic,
degenerating forms and timid new elements “fitting” can
be seen in the fronts’ decorations. Window fingerplates
for the second tier of the temple with clear division to
vertical and horizontal elements: semi-columns at consoles,
finely thinned out ledges, a small triangular pediment and
three beads in the head are taken from the 17th century
heritage. The metrical wall system differs from the most
of asymmetrical pictorial frontal compositions of the 17th
century and resembles the building of the Savior monastery
in Yaroslavl (1670s). The window fingerplates of the first
tier of the church with detached pediment, ears and small
bullhead over the torispherical crosspieces are an attempt
to renew the appearance of apertures framing. Originally
the churches had a tiled roof. To the beginning of the 20th
century the bell places were blocked up.
In the post revolution years the prayer services were hold
in the Archangel Michael temple in the periods since 1930
to 1933 and in the period since 1933 to 1935 the church
was used as a granary. The temple was finally destroyed
in 1935 and in 1970s it was restored anew by the restorers.
A museum was arranged there after that. In 2002 the temple
was restored completely by the monastery brethren and on
November, 21 on the day of three-hundredth anniversary of
the temple it was newly consecrated by the Archbishop Varsanofiy.
The church of the Holy Sign was destroyed to the plinth
in 1930s. In 1974 the building was restored anew and in
summer 1991 it was returned to the believers and on December,
10 1991 the Archbishop Varsanofiy consecrated the temple
and held there the first after a long-term interval Divine
Liturgy.
